University of Kentucky
Fundamental Neutron Physics Postdoctoral Position
The University of Kentucky Department of Physics and Astronomy invites
applications for a postdoctoral scholar position within the
department's Fundamental Interactions Group. The Fundamental
Interactions Group consists of seven faculty members conducting
research in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics, with
interests in the nucleon's electromagnetic and spin structure;
precision muon physics; and tests of fundamental symmetries with cold
and ultracold neutrons.
The successful candidate will be expected to play a significant role
in our neutron beta-decay program at Los Alamos National Laboratory
utilizing ultracold neutrons, and in preparations for a new search for
the Time-Reversal-Symmetry-violating (CP-violating) neutron electric
dipole moment (nEDM) at the Spallation Neutron Source. At LANL, we
have recently (December 2007) completed a first-ever measurement of
the parity-violating neutron beta-asymmetry (an input parameter to an
extraction of the CKM matrix element Vud from the neutron-sector) with
ultracold neutrons. A higher-statistics run for a sub-1% measurement
is planned for summer/fall 2008. Frequent travel to LANL for
experiment operations will be required. Opportunities will certainly
exist for data analysis. Future experiments (e.g., neutron lifetime,
beta-decay energy spectrum) with the ultracold neutron source may be
pursued. The nEDM experiment is currently in the R&D/optimization
phase, with construction expected to commence soon. Work will likely
focus on the design and characterization of the experiment's magnetic
fields and magnetic shielding.
A Ph.D. in experimental nuclear or particle physics is required;
however, prior experience in neutron physics and/or fundamental
symmetries is not required. The position will be supported by the
University of Kentucky, with a targeted start date of fall 2008. The
initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of
subsequent one-year renewals, contingent on the availability of
funding and both parties' mutual satisfaction. Interested candidates
should submit inquiries and/or applications (consisting of a
curriculum vitae / publication list, and three letters of
recommendation) to:

Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until
the position has been filled. The University of Kentucky is an Equal
Opportunity Employer.
